Are you wondering where the books went that used to be here? Many were transferred to the circulating stacks, while others were moved to the library's new on-campus storage space.

Welcome back for the fall semester!

The library will be open from 8 am to 6 pm on Monday, and from 8 am to 8 pm on Tuesday. The regular fall semester schedule will begin on Wednesday.

New space on the first floor!

We've been busy at the library this summer! Here's a photo of some new open space on the first floor.

This space formerly housed a large book stack area in the reference section (some of the books were moved to storage or the regular stacks, and others are now shelved elsewhere in the reference area).

We will be moving furniture into this space in the coming week--any opinions on how the furniture should be arranged?

On April 13, the Library hosted a reception to recognize faculty and staff publications from 2008 - 2010. Over 60 people attended the two-hour event, and everyone enjoyed seeing the impressive array of publications produced by our faculty.

We cleaned out our blog!

It was pointed out that people were finding older postings about hours or events on our blog, and if one didn't notice the date of the post, it could cause a lot of confusion.

Therefore, we cleaned out our blog--all of the older postings about hours have been deleted, as well as other announcements that were of a timely nature. Things that were kept: photos of projects or announcements that would still be interesting.

Hope that these changes help!

Faculty--Schedule your Library Instruction!

It's almost August, and everyone is busy preparing for the Fall semester! Before it slips your mind, request your library instruction sessions for the semester--scheduling early helps to ensure that we have the location and equipment needed for the session, and gives us time to work with you to plan the type of instruction you want! Library instruction sessions can be scheduled for any class and the sessions are specially tailored to meet the needs of your students so that they can find, evaluate and use information in a more effective manner to produce excellent course assignments and projects.

Noodletools Upgrade

If you're finishing up final papers this week and using Noodletools to manage your citations, you'll notice that the tool has a fresh new look! Most of the features work exactly as they did under the old release though, so don't worry that you'll have to re-learn the software before finishing your papers!

Noodletools recently updated their software and added some nice new features, such as a new sort feature when viewing a list of citations.

In August, there will be another upgrade, which will incorporate the latest updates to the APA format (the APA Style Guide to Electronic References), and some improvements to notecards and sharing features.

In December/January, Noodletools will add support for Chicago Manual of Style formatting--news that will be very useful to School of Franciscan Studies students!

Construction Updates!

As you can see, construction on the new Bogoni Rare Books Addition is progressing! It's quite exciting to see the progress at this point! Watch this blog for more pictures in the near future!

New Reference Area

The reference area in the library is almost finished! Check out the photo above to see our new reference desk furniture. This desk features areas for patrons to sit and work in consultation with the reference librarian on duty--a great improvement from the old days when people had to peer over the monitor at the desk, with no place to sit down!

Ready to start construction!

The construction fence is up--visible evidence that construction will be starting soon on the new Bogoni Rare Books Addition to the library!

We also have a construction cam so that you can see the construction live and in real time!

As for the current work inside the library, we're still waiting for the new furniture for the reference desk, but the new ceiling light fixtures in the front of the library have been installed--they are the reason for the extra light in the entrance area and across from the reference desk!

Check our blog often--we will have updates here on the construction and any other new things happening in the library!

Photos of Reference Area Redesign over Spring Break

Here are some photos showing the reference area re-design over Spring Break 2007 in the library. When break started, the old desk and rug were still in place. Maintenance took out the old desk, the network/phone/electric lines were finished, and a new rug was laid. The new "Reference" sign was also hung on the wall. These photos show some of the work in progress, including a photo of the new rug!

Reference Area Redesign Progress!

The images above show the progress we're making on the Reference area redesign! The back wall has been painted, and the side wooden wall has been removed to open the area up so that we can add a consultation table where you'll actually be able to sit down with us rather than standing in front of the desk that we currently have!

Next week, the phone and network lines will be moved to where we'll need them for the new desk, and the electric lines will be moved soon as well. Once this work is done, the old white desk will be removed, and new carpeting will be installed in that area. The lettering for the back wall should be here soon, and the new furniture is on order.

We're really excited about this new look for the reference area--it represents the new ways that we're trying to work with you! Please let us know what you think!

Reference Area Re-design

The library is working on an exciting re-design of the reference area on the main floor to better serve you!

If you've been in the library lately, you have no doubt noticed the first phase of the work. The wooden wall has been taken down between the reference desk and the main reading room. A consultation table will be housed in this area, giving you a space to sit down and work with a reference librarian on your research.

The wall behind the reference desk will soon be re-painted with an exciting new color.

Other enhancements that will be coming a little later include a new reference desk, a re-design of the area that currently houses the reference desk, and new carpet for that area.

Visit us often to watch the transformation, and read this blog for more information!

JSTOR now available

The library is pleased to announce that JSTOR's Arts & Sciences I collection was added to the database collection this month!

Use these links to use the new database (on-campus access only):

The Arts & Sciences I collection covers many subject areas, and covers major scholarly journals in each field. However, it is an archival service, so you won't find the most recent issues.

JSTOR is a not-for-profit organization with a dual mission to create and maintain a trusted archive of important scholarly journals, and to provide access to these journals as widely as possible.

Once a journal issue is in the JSTOR archive, it stays there! Nothing drops off, and more recent issues are constantly being added as the embargo period for that particular issue passes.

Where to find database passwords

If you use the library's databases on campus, you won't be asked for a login for most of them if you are using them on campus (including the residence halls).

If you need a login from off-campus and can't find your login sheet, you can easily get another one! If you have the SBU student planner, the logins are included near the back. You can check the electronic reserve site for a PDF copy that you can store on your computer. Or you can e-mail or call the reference desk (ref@sbu.edu or 375-2164) and someone will be glad to provide you with the password information.

We're sorry that we need to password-protect things, but because the fee that we pay is based on our student population, we cannot leave an open link up on the Web site--that would be a violation of our license agreements with the database vendors!

Additional Study Spaces during Exam Week

The library is extending its hours during Exam Week, and there are also other quiet study spaces available on campus!

From Saturday, December 9 through Thursday, December 14, you can use Plassmann 204/210 and the San Damiano Room in Francis Hall from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Other study spaces that are already open 24-hours per day include the designated study rooms in the Shay basement and the study lounge located on First Rob. University Ministries is also available.

Whether you're studying in the library, one of these other spaces, or in your residence, please remember that many library services are available 24-hours per day! You can search our online databases any time, and use our AskUs 24/7 virtual reference service.

New books/materials lists updated

The library's Web site now has updated new book/materials lists available again. You'll see the link on the left-hand side menu bar to "New Materials Lists." There is also a link in the "About the Library" section.

New book/materials lists are created at the end of every month. We had a hardware failure that prevented us from being able to transfer the new book data for a few months, but we managed to overcome that problem recently.

Print copies of the new book/materials lists are always available in the Acquisitions Department.

Mergent Online database access restored

The library just restored access to Mergent Online, a business database that was dropped this last summer in favor of Morningstar Library Edition, at the request of the School of Business. This decision was made based partly on the concern over the growing subscription fees for Mergent Online, and we wanted to move to a product that would be more stable, in terms of price, while still offering the content needed for business research on campus.

However, Mergent came to us and offered to restore our access for a much lower subscription cost, which would be grandfathered in so that we would be paying the same fee in subsequent years as well! Since we had liked the content on Mergent, and had dropped the subscription only over price concerns, we jumped at the offer, after consultation with the School of Business.

Mergent Online is now back, and is available at http://www.mergentonline.com. Right now, access is available only on campus, but we're working on getting our login/password access back.

Mergent offers coverage on U.S. and international companies, including annual reports, earnings estimates, equity pricing, institutional holdings, industry reports, and more.

PsycARTICLES added

The library just added the PsycARTICLES database. PsycARTICLES is produced by the American Psychological Association (APA), and is a full-text companion to the PsycInfo database that the library has offered for many years.

PsycARTICLES contains the full text from APA journals. Most journals go back to Volume 1, Issue 1. The earliest journal is Pyschological Review, which was started in 1894. For a complete list of journal titles included in this database, check http://www.apa.org/psycarticles/covlist.html

PsycARTICLES is offered in the EbscoHost interface, which is right where you'll find PsycInfo as well. Access is available off-campus as well.

New database--MathSciNet

The library has recently added the MathSciNet database. MathSciNet is produced by the American Mathematical Society and is available only on campus. On-campus access is also available at the Buffalo Center at the SBU computer lab in the wing of McGrath Library, or via campus dial-up.

To use the new database from a campus computer, go to http://www.ams.org/mathscinet

This database was added at the request of the mathematics faculty. When we checked into the pricing with our consortial partners, we found that we could add it for a nominal amount of money. We're very glad to be able to offer this database, and look forward to your comments!
